MUUS Collection is pleased to announce Widows of the Wind, an exhibition pairing the work of Deborah Turbeville and Paulina Olowska. Conceptualized by Olowska, Widows of the Wind features new paintings inspired by Turbeville’s images, with photographs on view selected by Olowska from MUUS Collection.
The two artists previously had their work in conversation in 2023 in the exhibition Resonance, staged in Mexico by kurimanzutto gallery. Widows of the Wind centers around a different series of work reinterpreted by Olowska: photographs made in the 1990s and early 2000s in Russia. Turbeville’s affinity for literature and bygone eras of opulence cemented her love of Russia, where she resided part-time when these photographs were taken. Many of her portraits, landscapes, and fashion images culminated in the book Studio St. Petersburg, produced in 1997; three of the photographs on view in this exhibition were published in Vogue Russia around that time.
Olowska reinterprets Turbeville’s signature grainy, grey, and cinematic fashion images images through her paintings of glamorous, fur-adorned women in frosted landscapes. MUUS Collection seeks opportunities to present the works of the artists we represent to new audiences and in new contexts, and we are thrilled to continue the collaboration with Olowska. Widows of the Wind is a testament to the unique impact of Turbeville’s work and her lasting influence.
