Pride and Protest: Photographs by Fred W. McDarrah at CPW

After debuting the exhibition at Paris Photo 2023, Pride and Protest: Photographs by Fred W. McDarrah is opening on June 1 at the Center for Photography at Woodstock (CPW) in Kingston, New York.

Curated by writer and New Yorker photography critic Vince Aletti, the exhibition is accompanied by a newsprint-style publication featuring text from Aletti. In chronicling one of the most important and historic social justice movements in American history, McDarrah captures the struggles and joys of the LGBTQ+ community leading the way towards liberation. Pride and Protest includes over 60 photographs made over three decades depicting the aftermath of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising and portraits of key queer authors, artists and performers. The majority of the images on display were first published in The Village Voice, where McDarrah served as staff photographer and editor. As Aletti writes: “Fred went on to document the protests, marches and key figures involved in the gay rights movement in allits contentious and celebratory public display.” MUUS Collection is proud to partner with CPW to bring McDarrah's impactful photographs to a new audience inNew York as a part of the continued mission to share works from the archive.
