For our second year as Cultural Partner at The Photography Show presented by AIPAD, MUUS Collection is pleased to announce Deborah Turbeville Polaroids: Scratching the Surface. Curated by Joel Smith, Richard L. Menschel Curator of Photography at the Morgan Library & Museum, the exhibition is dedicated to the rarely-seen Polaroid work by the imagemaker, fusing fashion imagery, collage, and cinematic narratives.“Turbeville’s art is frankly about romance, surface noise, and reverie,” says curator Joel Smith. “Her emergence in the 1970s reflects a sea change that freed photography from factuality, from ‘the street’ and the ‘realities’ that could theoretically be found there.”
As a part of the AIPAD Talks series, MUUS presented a panel discussion featuring Joel Smith, Nathalie Herschdorfer, and William A. Ewing, moderated by Richard Grosbard, Consulting Director of the Deborah Turbeville Archive at MUUS Collection.
